Traffic Stop Leads to Major Fentanyl Bust: 2 Calgary Residents Arrested

A routine traffic stop on Highway 1 near Swift Current, Saskatchewan, has led to a major drug bust, with law enforcement officers seizing eight kilograms of fentanyl—an amount capable of producing millions of potentially lethal doses.

Traffic Stop Uncovers Massive Drug Haul

On January 28, 2025, officers from the Saskatchewan RCMP’s Roving Traffic Unit (RTU) and the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol (SHP) were conducting proactive patrols when an RTU officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic-related infraction. Upon further investigation, the vehicle’s two occupants were detained for a drug trafficking probe.

A subsequent search uncovered eight kilograms of fentanyl hidden beneath the spare tire. The two individuals in the vehicle were arrested at the scene, and additional support was provided by the Swift Current RCMP and the Saskatchewan RCMP’s Saskatchewan Trafficking Response Team.

Charges Laid Against Calgary Residents

Swati Narula, 26, and Kunwardeep Singh, 28, both from Calgary, have been charged with:

  • Trafficking a controlled substance, contrary to Section 5(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA);
  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking, contrary to Section 5(2) of the CDSA.

The accused appeared in Swift Current Provincial Court on January 29, 2025. Investigators determined they were en route to Regina at the time of the arrest.

Law Enforcement’s Response

“This is a significant fentanyl seizure,” said Superintendent Grant St. Germaine, Officer in Charge of Saskatchewan RCMP Traffic Services. “Just a few grains of fentanyl can cause a fatal overdose. We have prevented millions of doses of this dangerous drug from entering our communities. Let this be a clear message to those attempting to transport illicit goods through our province—our officers are vigilant, and we will take action.”

Ongoing Efforts to Combat Drug Trafficking

The Saskatchewan RCMP’s Roving Traffic Unit has made several recent high-profile seizures:

  • January 23, 2025: Officers stopped a vehicle on Highway 16 near Lloydminster, leading to the seizure of approximately $400,000 in cash. The driver was charged with possession of the proceeds of crime over $5,000.
  • January 22, 2025: A traffic stop on Highway 13 near Ponteix resulted in the seizure of approximately nine kilograms of illicit cannabis and a large sum of cash. The driver was charged under the Cannabis Act.
  • January 9, 2025: Officers stopped a vehicle on Highway 1 near Swift Current, seizing approximately 700 kilograms of illicit cannabis and a sum of cash.
  • November 19, 2024: A traffic stop on Highway 16 near Maidstone led to the seizure of approximately 50 kilograms of cocaine and a large sum of cash.

“Investigations and intelligence confirm that illicit drugs are being transported across provincial borders into Saskatchewan,” added Supt. St. Germaine. “Our officers, working closely with partner agencies, are committed to disrupting illegal activity and ensuring the safety of our communities.”

The Saskatchewan RCMP continues its efforts to curb drug trafficking and protect residents from the dangers of illicit substances. The seizure of eight kilograms of fentanyl is a critical success in these ongoing enforcement efforts.
