The SELECT COMFORT(R) 'Sleep Like a Star' eBay(R) Auction Generates
Thousands for Ronald McDonald House Charities
MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Think owning Hilary Swank's bed
could only happen in your dreams? For fans who bid during the Select
Comfort(R) "Sleep Like a Star" eBay auction, sleeping in the same bed as
Morgan Freeman, James Denton and Marcia Cross now is a comfy-cozy reality.
From Oct. 19-28, avid fans of celebrities such as Randy Jackson and
Venus Williams battled to win autographed SLEEP NUMBER(R) beds, similar to
the ones found in their favorite stars' bedrooms. More than 28 celebrities
sleeping on Sleep Number(R) beds signed remotes and bed labels, with all
proceeds from auctioning off the autographed beds going to Ronald McDonald
House Charities.
The "Sleep Like a Star" eBay auction raised more $50,000 for the
charity thanks to caring stars such as actor Blair Underwood as well as
generous fans such as Deborah Vallandingham of North Carolina, whose bid
won her Hilary Swank's autographed queen-sized Sleep Number bed.
Prior to the start of the auction, "Entertainment Tonight" host Mark
Steines expressed the desire to see his Sleep Number bed make a difference
for the organization, "I hope my bed brings the charity a lot of
well-deserved support. Ronald McDonald House Charities is so important
because it helps to improve the heath and well-being of children and their
families around the world."
Steines' wish was realized as his autographed Sleep Number bed sold for
$2,725 -- the highest winning bid of the 10-day auction.
Hockey great Phil Esposito received 47 bids during the online auction,
the highest number of bids received by any of the 28 celebrities. The
closest contender was billiards prodigy Jeanette Lee, also known as the
"Black Widow." NBA newcomer Kyle Lowry scored the second-highest single
donation of more than $2,000 for his autographed Sleep Number bed.
The "Sleep Like a Star" eBay auction was just one of the many ways
Select Comfort celebrated its five-year anniversary as the official bed
provider for Ronald McDonald House Charities. On Oct. 19, Select Comfort
delivered 400 Sleep Number beds in a one-day donation "blitz" in 15 cities
across North America. During the same day, Select Comfort, with the help of
Marcia Gay Harden, donated its 4,000th bed during an event at the Ronald
McDonald House(R) of New York in Manhattan. At the event, Harden
entertained critically ill children with a naptime book reading.
"When your child has a life-threatening illness and is being treated in
a city far from home, getting a good night's sleep is next to impossible,"
explains Doug Collier, chief marketing officer for Select Comfort. "By
donating Sleep Number beds and funds to Ronald McDonald Houses across North
America, we help provide the restorative sleep that is critical to
maintaining a child's strength, spirit and determination to get well."
The "Sleep Like a Star" eBay auction celebrity participants included:
Blair Underwood, Brad Paisley, Danica McKellar, Hilary Swank, James Denton,
Jeanette Lee, Jennifer Beals, Josh Groban, Justin Berfield, Kevin Sorbo,
Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Kyle Lowry, Mark Steines, Marcia Gay Harden,
Marcia Cross, Matthew Ashford, Michael Payne, Morgan Freeman, Nia Vardalos,
